Gospel Jam and Concert
make a joyful noise
with American Roots Music
The Roots Music Gospel Jam and Concert is a chance for people to play and sing old gospel songs in the roots music tradition of the community sing. We play bluegrass, folk and other Americana music styles. The program is as much a concert as a jam so that it offers singers and spectators an evening of music. The jam is spirited and audience interactive with stories, contests, and fun activities. The evening has included everything from clogging contests on bubble-wrap to kazoo night, where we played a song and everyone attending got a kazoo to play and take home.
We have a core group of musicians and singers that play through a sound system and we rotate others that are interested into the sound system. But everyone is encouraged to sit in the front row and play along. If you're a beginner, there will likely be other more advanced musicians to help you along. If you're not a player but like old time gospel music, please tell a friend and come spend an evening with us. There is nothing we like better than a room full of folks singing along!
We break the evening into two sections. The first section is a traditional gospel sing where we play songs that entice the audience to sing along. This fun time comes with lots of shukkin', some stories, contests and prizes. We then have a short break with a free BBQ plate-dinner and refreshments. After dinner, we have smaller groups play in a more performance based set. If you'd like to perform or have a small group (2-5 instruments/singers), we'd love to have you come and perform a couple of songs for us in this set. Just contact me for more information.
This little jam is usually held the 4th Sunday of the month, in Elverta CA. This rural town is just a few minutes north of downtown Sacramento. If that Sunday is associated with a traditional 3-day weekend holiday, then there will be no Jam that month. Some months have 5 Sundays, but the Jam is always on the 4th Sunday. Some months will not have a jam due to conflicts, so always check here first.
